Knowing Your Mobile Phone IMEI Number

The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number is a unique 15-digit serial number for identifying a mobile phone devices.

Every mobile phone in the world has an IMEI number, stored in the Equipment Identity Register (EIR), a database which contains information about all valid mobile phone phones in the world.

All genuine mobile phone devices have valid IMEI numbers and meet international technical standards of manufacture and safety.

Counterfeit mobile devices have do not have valid IMEI numbers and as such do not meet international technical and safety standards. Counterfeit mobile devices can have adverse impact on the health of consumers as they quality cannot be ascertained.

As part of its consumer protection mandate, the Authority has responsibility of ensuring consumers access ICT goods and services of the highest quality. The Authority type approves or authorizes the sale of mobile devices and other equipment in the country.

Consumers are encouraged to purchase such devices from authorized vendors, who are required to display a Vendor Licence from the Authority.

How to Verify Your IMEI Number

You can now verify your IMEI number by dialling *#06# on your mobile device and texting the 15-digit number to 1555. You will get a response on whether the IMEI number is valid or not, including the model of the mobile phone. This service is FREE. You can also check online through the IMEI Checker below:
