The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) is the regulatory authority for the ICT industry in Kenya with responsibilities in telecommunications, e-commerce, broadcasting and postal/courier services. CA is also responsible for managing the country’s numbering and frequency spectrum resources, administering the Universal Service Fund (USF) as well as safeguarding the interests of users of ICT services.
Pursuant to Section 23 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act 1998 (as amended), the Authority is charged with ensuring consumers are protected from substandard ICT apparatus. In this regard, the Authority wishes to review the Guidelines on features and technical specifications for mobile cellular devices imported into and distributed in Kenya.
These guidelines obligate vendors and manufacturers to ensure consumers buy mobile cellular devices that meet approved standards. The draft guidelines are available on the Authority’s website at: https://ca.go.ke/consumers/public-consultations/open-consultations/
Stakeholders, interested parties and the public have until 23rd April 2021 to submit their inputs and comments on the revised guidelines. The comments received will inform any changes to the final guidelines. The finalized guidelines will be published on the Authority website for use by the industry and the public.
